The six prefectures that comprise the Tohoku area of northern Honshu produce many of Japan's finest sakes. For clarity and aroma, there's Yamagata. For bigger taste, there's Iwate and Aomori. Miyagi sakes are admired for their subtlety, Fukushima's for just the opposite. And for easy drinkability, it's hard to beat the sakes of Akita Prefecture.

This evening's selection consists of 15 daiginjo, 12 ginjo and 12 junmai labels. Among them are 13 gold award and 7 silver award recipients from the 2009 U.S. National Sake Appraisal. Several of the award winners are yamahai labels, highlighting recent improvements in yamahai brewing technique.
